A new charity partnership

Thank you to the fabulous team at West Earlham Dental Health Practice for choosing to support us with their latest charity partnership.

West Earlham Dental Health Practice is a small, family-run NHS and private dental practice in Norwich. Their focus is to deliver a good standard of healthcare and calm and caring dentistry. They offer a variety of dental care services, including AIRFLOW cleanings, general and cosmetic dentistry, fillings, root canals, dental implants, Invisalign and more. No matter what your personal dental concerns may be, their team is ready to address them and give you a smile to be proud of.

In addition to helping their patients, they also support a variety of charities and organisations to support their local community, and we are delighted the team has chosen to partner with us to help local children and young people to finally feel hopeful of a better future.

COVID 19 Guidelines Update

In line with government and official infection control policies, our “standard operating procedure” will be maintained for the foreseeable future with no immediate changes on July 19th 2021. To remind those that are not already aware, the significant points of this operating protocol are: -

Covid screening prior to your appointment upon booking and immediately before your appointment and before entering the building.
Temperature checks and hand sanitising gel upon entering the building.
We do not have toilet facilities for patient use, so please use the toilet at home prior to your visit as much as you can!
MANDATORY use of facemasks in the building until you are in the surgery room (this is to minimise risk of possible infection to other people such as non-clinical staff members and other patients in areas such as corridors and reception). Exceptions will be made if you are medically exempt.
Full PPE for clinical staff for any dental procedures that generate aerosols. As many of you are now used to, we look a little bit different to how we used to! This is to protect not only ourselves but also to minimise the risk of transmitting Covid to others.
Waiting rooms are currently out of use. This is to minimise the number of people in the building at any one time which in turn helps minimise the risk of transmission between people.

Patients face temperature checks and ‘skeleton service’ as dentists reopen

People in need of urgent dental treatment faced a “skeleton service” and strict new safety measures as some dentists reopened after 12 weeks in lockdown.

Patients, some who have been nursing painful or discomforting problems, were finally able to see a dentist at some practises in Norfolk from Monday but many were not able to offer a full range of treatments.

The British Dental Association (BDA) warned there will be no return to “business as usual” as practices prioritise patients in the most urgent need of treatment and introduce strict social distancing and hygiene rules.

At Diss Dental Health Centre, which was amongst those to reopen on Monday, patients had to undergo a phone risk assessment before a face-to-face appointment.

They are required to wear a mask and to wait outside before being called in to undergo a temperature check and to sanitise their hands.

Riverside Dental Practice in Norwich plans to reopen on June 11 but patients will have their temperature taken with anyone above 37.8°C not being treated.

Dr Bim Sawhney, clinical director and practice owner, said: “The vast majority of our patients are otherwise healthy without coronavirus infection and we are confident that we are able to provide normal dental care for these patients in as normal an environment as possible while bearing in mind our responsibilities to mitigate risks of infection spread as far as is practically possible.

“This policy will be constantly reviewed and updated as necessitated by circumstances over time.”

Rachel Webb, director of primary care and public health for NHS England in the East of England, said: “Practices will look quite different, as measures have been put in place to provide a safe environment for dental services.

“These precautions will mean that clinicians will not be able to work as quickly as usual.”

Dr Gautam Sharma, of the West Earlham Dental Practice in Norwich, which aims to reopen from June 22, said the practice had about 150 patients needing to be seen on an urgent basis, before any new daily emergencies, but expected to treat about 10 to 15 a day when it reopens.

He said: “I think it is really important that we let the public know what is going to be a new normal where we have been closed for nearly two and a half months.

“There are thousands of appointments that we have had to cancel, but it is really important that we start to see our urgent care patients who have had a lot of pain or problems.”

Some patients in Norfolk said they feared they may face further waits as the backlog of urgent cases is cleared.

David Bowden, from Dereham, said: “I lost a front crown shortly after lockdown. Luckily it hasn’t been painful, so I’m not sure it will be seen as urgent. I might be left waiting a few more weeks.”

Maree Lynn Woodcock said: “I have been left with holes in my teeth as was in the middle of treatment and had an infection 10 weeks ago and I have been in pain since.

“I phoned my dentist and was told to buy filler from Boots as they wouldn’t be doing work on teeth for a long time.”

Dear Dental Colleague,

As a fellow dentist and dental practice owner, I am requesting your support in what I feel could be an important initiative for the dental profession over the short and medium term. Like me, I am sure it saddens you deeply to hear that so many care staff, in addition to our great hospital and key workers, are struggling to get access to the very PPE which would keep them safe.

I have witnessed first-hand in Lebanon during charity work for a dental charity of which I am a trustee as to how important safety is and how we have a unique opportunity where we can help others.

We know from the government’s own stark daily statistics, that deaths in care homes and hospices, as a result of Covid-19, are all too common and unfortunately increasing.

So how can we as a profession help keep these compassionate and committed staff safe and well, so that they can continue the vital care of people from within our communities?

Rallying for PPE I

believe that we have the opportunity to rally together and create a timely and crucial network of PPE supplies.

Like myself, I am sure you still have the opportunity to seek daily orders from your dental suppliers, thanks to your long-standing relationships. And indeed, you may also have your own excess stock, sitting inside practices which, sadly, you have had to close for now.

I am therefore asking you if you will consider joining me, to collectively gather as much PPE stock as we possibly can, such that it can then be distributed among the region’s care homes, care agencies, GP surgeries and hospices.

This gesture of collaboration will make such a difference to those who work in the sector and would not at all impact on the supply which is being received by our urgent dental centres.

BDA confirms...

The BDA confirms to me that they have received a number of interest similar to this initiative around the UK, who are keen to do something relevant throughout this hugely difficult period. I know they support the idea that we in East Anglia would look to come together in this mission.

JULIE’S VANISHING DENTAL PHOBIA

LATE last year we set out on a mission to find Norfolk’s most nervous dental patient – in the hope that we could cure someone of their phobia.

Almost six months on, we thought it was time we shared the incredible story of success which has come from this process.

Working with renowned psychotherapist James Brittain, we selected Norfolk mum Julie Rix to be our deserving – if anxious – dental patient.

Since childhood, Julie, now 57 years of age, has been petrified of the dentist’s chair, and has always done her best to avoid getting treatment if she could.

We felt she was the perfect candidate for our collective approach with James and set about providing her with a number of psychotherapy-based phobia-conquering sessions.

“I am amazed it has been so successful already,” admitted Julie recently.

“I was excited to be selected as the winner of the competition, but I also knew that my fear was so extreme, that I wondered if there was really anything which could be done to ‘fix’ me.

“The sessions with James were great. They helped me through visualisation and processing my thoughts, and as a result, I’ve now had six appointments – including having to have a filling.

“I can honestly say that it’s completely transformed the way I feel about going to the dentist, and I certainly wouldn’t put my oral health at risk by avoiding appointments in the future. It’s amazing that it’s something I can now do very calmly.”

Dr Gautam Sharma, who heads the dental practice, is also delighted with the outcome.

He said: “We’re all thrilled for Julie. She certainly did have a very deep-rooted fear, so none of us really knew how successful it would be for sure – but the transformation has been incredible.”

He added: “Sadly, a large number of people are putting off dental appointments, and ignoring their oral health, because they are petrified of visiting a dentist. This proves that a solution like the one which James offers, really does make a difference.”

WANTED: NORFOLK’S MOST ANXIOUS DENTAL PATIENT

A NORFOLK dental practice has announced details of a contest to find the county’s most nervous patient.

The West Earlham Dental Health Practice has become increasingly aware of the number of patients putting their oral health at risk as a result of ‘dental phobia’, so has teamed up with a leading UK expert in tackling such fears.

Dr Sharma, owner of the West Earlham Dental Health Practice, has tasked renowned psychotherapist James Brittain, with providing a course of phobia treatment to one lucky patient – in the hope of curing their fear for good.

The selected ‘dental-phobic’ Norfolk resident will receive a series of support sessions from James, followed by any required dental treatment.

“It’s a sad fact that a large number of people are putting off dental appointments, and ignoring their oral health, because they are petrified of visiting a dentist,” said Dr Sharma.

“This has been something which has frustrated my team and I for a while, so we decided to seek out a psychotherapist with specialist knowledge in shifting phobias – and James is the perfect person.

“He’s worked extensively in healthcare environments to deal with phobias previously, so we’re really hopeful that we’ll achieve some good success for our lucky winner.”

The chosen patient will be selected by a team of judges, and will receive their treatment between now and the end of the year.
